Music opens us up to a new way of understanding.

In part three, Kate Reid explained what “Doin’ It for the Chicks” really means. Here, she gets serious about love and work.

You mentioned on the phone that you’ve recently gone through a breakup. Care to share any details?

I don’t want to say much about it. We were friends for about two years before we got together, and this was the first relationship I’ve had that’s ended amicably; that feels like a milestone. I think it was possible because we had the friendship as a foundation.

I still love her, we still love each other deeply, but we’re going in different directions. I’ve been in her kids’ lives for a long time and I still am, and that’s not going to change, but I had to think about, what is my work on this planet? I had to follow the calling of my soul, as I think Ferron calls it.

Can you say what that is now? What is your work on this planet?

It’s becoming less clear now that I’m going into school, but it was clear to me a few years ago that it was about the LGBTQ movement, and doing work in our school systems. There’s a lot of work that needs to be done.
There are a lot of great educators in the schools, but something about music takes the learning to a different level. I can’t really explain it, but I think pairing music with lyrics sort of gets inside our bodies. It opens us up to a new way of learning and a new way of understanding.

I’m teaching at the Santa Fe University of Art and Design on key major social movements in the 20th Century, and the songs that fueled those movements. All these writers provided fuel for the movements – the music takes the culture to a different place. I don’t know where my music will go from here, but I want to keep seeing how it unfolds. I’ll keep following that path.
