In the aftermath of Amendment One passing in North Carolina on Tuesday, President Obama makes history and comes out in support of same-sex marriage.
On Wednesday May 9, 2012, President Barack Obama publicly announced his support for same-sex marriage. In an interview that will air on ABC’s Good Morning America on Thursday, Obama spoke openly with reporter Robin Roberts. “At a certain point I’ve concluded that for me, personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married,” he says.
Obama is the first president in history to publicly endorse same-sex marriage. News of his stance on marriage equality comes at a crucial time, since just yesterday, North Carolina passed Amendment One, banning gay marriage in their state—a move that since then has stirred up much political discussion on the issue of equal rights in America, and according to a spokesperson, left Obama “disappointed.”
Obama’s opponent in the 2012 presidential election, Mitt Romney, still stands firm on his opposition of same-sex marriage.
Many supporters of Obama took to their blogs and Twitter this afternoon to celebrate his hugely important announcement.
