Yet Gottschalk has just been celebrated in a beautiful piece in The New York Times, ahead of her appearance in Brave, Beautiful Outlaws, opening at the Leslie-Lohman Museum Of Gay And Lesbian Art in New York on 29 August 2018.
"Look at her, proud and defiant," reads an Instagram post by the LLMGLA museum.
"Donna Gottschalk, photographed by Diana Davies, holds a poster at Christopher Street during the 1970 Gay Liberation Day March.
"Our exhibition, Brave, Beautiful Outlaws, presents the work of Gottschalk, a photographer active in the early period of radical lesbian organising in New York and California during the 1970s."
…and boy do we wish we could make it to The Big Apple for the exhibition.
“Donna Gottschalk is the most famous lesbian photographer you’ve never heard of — until now” exhibition curator Deborah Bright, told The New York Times.
Brave, Beautiful Outlaws focuses on Gottschalk's early work, "during the time of her most intense political activism," continues journalist Kerry Manders, who wrote the NYT piece.
"Ms. Bright identifies Ms. Gottschalk as a 'talented and sensitive visual storyteller,' whose work comprises a 'vital contribution to the historical record.'
"Part autobiography, part ethnography."
