Gay women come out for Lesbian Visibility Day

Watch Stonewall’s new video celebrating lesbians featuring Ruth Hunt, Teddy Edwardes and more.

It’s Lesbian Visibility Day!

Started in the US 2008 with the aim of celebrating lesbian life and culture and its diversity, 10 years on, the day is finally getting some much-needed recognition this side of the pond too, with more and more gay women coming out and talking about being a lesbian.

But why is lesbian visibility so important? Stonewall asked that very question to women including chief executive Ruth Hunt, model and entrepreneur Teddy Edwardes, firefighter Katie Cornhill and DIVA’s Carrie Lyell, and here’s what they said.

“Lesbians are everywhere”

Yvonne Stewart-Williams

“My lesbian identity is really important to me”

Ruth Hunt

“It’s important to me to show that Butch is beautiful”

Carrie Lyell

“Lesbian visibility allows people to understand the identities that exist in the LGBTQ community”

Rachel Ishmael

“Diversity is not about us all being the same”

Tabitha Benjamin
