Should no longer be anyone’s secret with catchy debut album
Itβs always exciting to discover a new band that produces some tight beats and catchy melodies and Secret Someones is one such band. Β With their debut album, Headfirst, this band delivers a number of tracks with just the right mix of pop, making their music accessible. Β βI Wonβt Followβ is illustrative of this.
βQuit Pulling Me Downβ starts with lead vocals accented by a light beat and hazy guitar sound. Β This all builds with the drums and finally we are hit with the fun chorus – it doesnβt disappoint.
Itβs hard to pick a bad track on this album with most songs instant radio wave pleasers. Β Take βLet You Goβ, which from the first few notes draws the listener into the melody with ease.
However, itβs the familiar sound of βHey Hey Honeyβ that is the stand out track on this album for me. Β Yes itβs definitely catchy, but there is a familiarity to its sound that had me drawn to it again and again and the anthem chant in the bridge probably helped get me hooked in and holding on.
Title track βHeadfirstβ and βOnly One I Wantβ both possess sharp lyrics and smooth electronic beats complementing their respective choruses through the that electro synth sound that is every bit hip now.
βHeartbreakerβ is the requisite ballad track on the album, although I use the term βballadβ in these circumstances in the loose sense. Itβs a slower tempo track lamenting love and heartbreak in the way all classic ballads do β but itβs still very much punchy and doesnβt verge on the cheesy melodrama.
Secret Someones is the brainchild of NYC singer/songwriters Bess Rogers, Lelia Broussard, Hannah Winkler and their drummer/multi-instrumentalist Zach Jones. If you love Tom Petty, Weezer and alike then youβll love this predominantly female led collaboration.
