Rainbow Families Celebrate International Family Equality Day

The 5th annual International Family Equality Day will be celebrated by all kinds of families on Sunday 1 May.

Rainbow Families will celebrate the 5th annual International Family Equality Day on 1 May, 2016. The group will join LGBTIQ family organizations from around the world in celebration.

The theme this year is 'Love Makes a Family,' and the group is partnering with the City of Sydney for a picnic at Sydney Park for rainbow families, friends, and allies. This year’s motto is “Families without borders.”

This election year holds the possibility of a highly-divisive plebiscite on marriage equality. In the light of this, event spokesperson and Rainbow Families Co-Chair Ashley Scott wants to highlight the diversity of family structures and strengthen solidarity among families with LGBTIQ parents.

“It’s our hope that by celebrating IFED, we can help raise awareness among politicians and the general public about the need for equal treatment and recognition for all families, regardless of the sexual orientation or gender identity of their family’s members," Scott said. "IFED is going to be a great opportunity for our community, family and friends to get together to show their support, and have a fun day at the same time.”

Following this year’s motto, Scott also said it is important for Australia to be involved in this important global movement.

“All over the world, more and more children grow up in families where one or both of their parents are lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans or queer. Yet, these “rainbow families” face very different situations. In many places, including here in Australia, there is still a long way to go for same-sex families to receive the same recognition and legal rights as heterosexual parented families."
