The first female Othello in a major production has opened to great reviews at The Everyman Theatre in Liverpool, as Golda Rosheuvel performs the leading role as a gay black woman in a landmark production of one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays.

How hard can a heart be?

How jealous can a soul be?

How far can evil go before love is destroyed?

Othello tells the story of a newly appointed black military general, who is held in great esteem by many, but whose promotion causes ripples through the established white, male-dominated middle class. She is then subjected to a calculated campaign of manipulation by jealous Iago who is determined to cause her downfall.

“Straight, white and male or black and lesbian, the various characters in this tragic mess were all too human.” Northern Soul

Directed by Gemma Bodinetz, winner of Best Director at the 2017 UK Theatre Awards, this production is the third in a series of four plays by the Everyman Company in 2018. Using the original script the cast explore themes of love, power, jealousy and deception synonymous with the Shakespearean tragedy.

“I wanted to direct something that’s resonant, that’s electrifying to the times we live in now as well as a beautiful portrayal of something that was written 400 years ago. The decision to cast Othello as a woman came from a desire to make the play as electric as it might have been to the very first audience who saw it.” Director Gemma Bodinetz
