If you’re in New York on June 23 and 24, you now know where to go!
If you visit New York and ask for recommendations from a local, it’s basically inevitable that someone will suggest the Wythe Hotel in Williamsburg. Impossibly cool, with one of the best rooftop bar views of the Manhattan skyline in the city, the Wythe is its own best advertisement.
That being said, it’s now offering another. And we think that you’ll be particularly receptive to its latest inducement: Queer|Art has partnered with the Wythe to present “Queer|Art|Pride,” a special weekend of $10 screenings by rising star LGBTQ filmmakers, taking place Friday, June 23rd and Saturday, June 24th at Wythe Hotel.
“Queer|Art|Pride” comprises an afternoon of short films and two evenings of feature film screenings. All films are by alumni filmmakers of Queer|Art|Mentorship, a program organized by Queer|Art that brings together early-career and advanced-career artists for a year-long exchange in five different fields: Film, Literature, Performance, Visual Art, and Curatorial Practice. “Queer|Art|Pride” is curated by Vanessa Haroutunian, Program Coordinator at Queer|Art.
On Friday, June 23rd at 8pm, My Best Day, directed by Erin Greenwell, will screen. Written and directed by Erin Greenwell in 2012, the film follows a receptionist whose life is turned upside down when the father she never knew calls for a refrigerator repair.
On Saturday June 24 at 4pm, the Wythe will host an afternoon program of short films by alumni of the Queer|Art|Mentorship program, covering a wide range of subjects in a variety of formats, including: a documentary about The Clit Club set in New York’s Meatpacking District in the 1990s (“Grit and Grind,” co-directed by Sasha Wortzel); an animated film about a zombie nurse who struggles with her identity and job (“SANDRA,” directed by Mylo Mendez); and a narrative film about a young Mennonite who risks his life to find love and freedom in the city (“Unicorn,” directed by Rodrigo Bellott). Other films on this program include “Mami y Yo y Mi Gallito” directed by Arisledya Dilone and “The Strange Ones” co-directed by Lauren Wolkstein, which inspired the 2017 feature film of the same title to be released soon. On Saturday, June 24 at 8pm, M.F.A., directed by Natalia Leite will have a spin on the screen. The 2017 feature film follows an art student who taps into a rich source of creative inspiration after the accidental slaughter of her rapist.
Queer|Art|Mentorship is now entering its seventh year. The Mentors for the 2017-2018 Program cycle have recently been announced and applications for the program open June 1st. Queer|Art staff will be on hand during “Queer|Art|Pride” to answer questions about the program for prospective applicants.
The Wythe rooftop will also be hosting a plethora of queer night life events, from drag queens to performances by The Dauphine of Bushwick, Horrorchata, and Gayletter.
