The Film Of The Summer Is “Summertime”

Catch this beautiful feminist romance.

Summertime by acclaimed French writer-director Catherine Corsini is set in 1971, in France against a heady backdrop of feminist awakening and unanticipated lesbian desire. It's a beautifully told tale of the unexpected romance between farm girl Delphine (Izïa Higelin) and fiery feminist organizer Carole (Cécile de France,) a Parisian. This unlikely pair awakens and transforms each other in surprising ways. After living in the dynamic city, Delphine is called home to help her family in the countryside and is forced to choose between her responsibility to them and her love for Carole. Which will she choose? Absent from the film are the cliches we've come to expect of films dealing with historic comings out or depictions of the love that dare not speak its name. This is a beautiful, sensual, and resonant film, made by women for women, about the Women's Movement, and the right to choose on many levels, the struggles for which continues today.

Summertime opens in New York and LA on July 22.
