Swiping right, threesomes and Lena Waithe

What Cydney Yeates has been musing on this week

1. I always swipe right when I see someone I know on a dating app. It’s the unwritten rule of the game. So when I saw my ex, I didn’t hesitate in ticking the green love heart. Not soon after, I got a notification saying we’d matched, and she quickly slid into my messages with a little "haha"’ at being reunited. And the Tinder conversation turned into a WhatsApp one, and before I knew it we’d planned to meet up at a bar in Soho. And yes, you guessed it, it was awkward as hell. We spent almost four hours drinking through pregnant pauses and skirting around why I’d originally called it off in the first place. I’ve now made an exception to my rule: don’t ever swipe right for exes…

2. Continuing the theme of past love interests, I recently met up with a girl I went on a few dates with back in my hometown. She’d just returned to London after a long period of teaching abroad. We went for lunch and she told me all about her experiences, and how she’s since moved in with her boyfriend. Insert a forced “I’m happy for you grin”, with a side of “WTF is going on?” eyes. I was stumped and mulled over why on earth she’d initiated our reconciliation. Naturally, I discussed our meeting with my hoard of agony aunts, and alarm bells rang in their ears and chimed “threesome, threesome, threesome.” Maybe she just wanted a friend in the sometimes overwhelming capital? Guess we’ll just have to see.

3. Let’s all take a moment to appreciate the goddess that is Lena Waithe. Not only is she serving Black Excellence in Hollywood, but she’s also fighting tooth and nail to get queer folks and people of colour onto our telly screens. “I don’t want to be White,” Lena explained in this month’s Vanity Fair cover story, “I don’t want to be straight. I don’t want to blend in.” If you’ve been living under a rock over the past few weeks and haven’t read her interview or seen the shoot, for the love of all things gay, do it. And then watch the Master Of None episode Thanksgiving and come talk to me.
