Stockholm Voices: Anna Gren

Our multi-part series of interviews with savvy Swedish lesbians. \r

Stockholmer Anna, 30, works within the restaurant business and likes to travel, go out to eat and to have a good time. Here she tells us about her favorite things in Stockholm.

What is your favorite Stockholm neighborhood?

I like Kungsholmen because there is such a mix of everything there. You can find anything from good places to swim in the summer to good restaurants. The rocks in Fredhäll are very cozy and perfect for swimming or a picnic. If you’re willing to climb a little bit you can have a spot all for yourself! There’s lots of restaurants along the water at Norr Mälarstrand. One of my favorites are Orangeriet and for drinks I think Mälarpaviljongen is a nice choice.

Do you have any favorite museum?

As most Stockholmers I like Fotografiska with all its contemporary photography. The Natural History Museum, Naturhistoriska, is also a favorite of mine.

Where’s the best place to go for a Swedish fika?

I don’t have a specific favorite café since I prefer to buy my fika treats and then sit outside in the nature. One of my favorite spots to sit is Vinterviken, a beautiful place just south of the city.

Do you have any good lunch place that you can recommend?

The Pier in Kristineberg has great food for a decent price and at a great venue.

What restaurant would you bring your girlfriend to?

I would bring my girlfriend to Svartengrens in Vasastan. It’s a restaurant focused on meat but they only use organically Swedish produce and meat from the Stockholm archipelago. That’s an experience for you! I love that they focus on meat but are against mass production. All their meat is from Stockholm and you know that the animals have had a good life. At the restaurant they can even tell you the name of the cows!

What would you recommend for a date in Stockholm?

I would definitely do something outside whatever the season! Stockholm has so many beautiful promenades and walks in the middle of the city. For example take a walk around the island of Kungsholmen, which has beautiful views over the water. Then I would suggest to stop by a café or a bar to take a drink. In summertime I would suggest Trattorian or Mälarpaviljongen. Another good date is to walk to Moderna Museet, the Modern Museum, and have a cup of coffee there.

What is Stockholm’s best bar?

I like the hotel bar at Scandic Grand Central which has a nice venue with two floors. I like the vibe there and there’s lots of nice people and good DJs. If you come to Stockholm I think you should see Och Himlen Därtill in Skanstull. They have great cocktails and also a wonderful view over the rooftops of Södermalm.

Where do you go to shop?

I like to shop at department store PUB at Hötorget. They have lots of great Scandinavian and International brands and you can find great jewelry there.

What are you proud of as a Stockholmer?

I’m proud of Stockholm being an open city! I never have to consider what people will think if I want to hold hands with my girlfriend or kiss in public. The fact that people in this city don’t assume that we are just friends just because we are two girls makes me proud!

I am also proud that there is so much good Swedish music. Some bands have been successful outside of Sweden but a lot of them stay here. Lykke Li is one of my favorites and also Tallest man on earth.

Best way of meeting girls in Stockholm?

I think the best way of meeting girls in Stockholm is the lesbian and gay clubs. I have actually met all of my girlfriends out on gay clubs so that would be my best tip. I haven’t been to a club in a while but Moxy’s girl parties are always good. I have had a lot of good nights at club Switch as well.
