Our HERstory …
Nanc, founding and current president of the Betty’s, came to Las Vegas like so many women to pursue her career.
She was missing the lesbian community she left behind in Canada so she invited women to meet her in a parking lot for a hike long before social media was available.
The word of mouth spread and some 50 or so women joined her. Energized by the need for a lesbian community, Nanc and Kirsten joined together and held a grass roots meeting on December 22, 2000 with eager kindred spirits sitting around a dining table.
Betty’s Outrageous Adventures was formed with the goal of enriching your circle of friends. So on a crisp, cool Sunday in January 2001, the first Betty hike at Red Rock Canyon sprang into full bloom.
What We Have Done and Plan on Doing …
Fast forward to December 2015. The Betty’s hosted the first ever “Jingle Mingle” Holiday Dance on the strip at New York, New York. The eleven members of the Board of Directors worked tirelessly to ensure that it would be a wonderful event.
And so it was a spectacular event. The dance floor overflowed with enthusiastic dancing. No one wanted the night to end! So on February 13, 2016, the Betty’s board again worked tirelessly hosting the “Love Win’s” Valentines Dance celebrating the long fought battle for marriage equality. Since the “Jingle Mingle” dance, you can find the Betty’s enjoying coffee together, hiking, cycling, sharing brunch and dinners together, going to the movies, 51s game, enjoying the theatre to name some of the social and active adventures.
Community Involvement …
We are making HERstory in Las Vegas! It is with great PRIDE that the Betty’s are planning a very special event for the entire LGBT community. To celebrate Las Vegas Pride 2016, the Betty’s are celebrating by inviting the LGBT community to a special COMEDY night featuring one of the top lesbian comediennes on the United States circuit today. Guaranteed to make your stomach hurt from laughing so hard and leaving you chuckling for weeks after her performance, Suzanne Westenhoefer will take center stage at the Baobab Theatre making her Betty’s debut in Las Vegas on Saturday October 22, 2016 at 7:30pm.
Tickets will be on sale on September 8 on the official website. Seating is limited to 200 general admission seats and 50 VIP seats. After the performance, a private reception with Suzanne for the 50 VIP ticket holders will be held.
The Betty’s Affect …
The Betty’s have welcomed many new faces to Las Vegas and the womyn’scommunity. New women have joined the board excited to continue offering lesbians community and friendship. The Betty’s offer a safe harbor for all womyn to make new friends and renew old ones. Some women have been able to learn more about what it means to part of the LGBT community and talk about experiences or ask questions.
Some have come to feel a sense of comfort and belonging after abreakup or moving to Las Vegas. Some have joined us at events just because they were vacationing in Las Vegas. Some have come just because we are here.
There is always a tomorrow for the Betty’s …
The Betty’s are strong and united and will continue to provide active and social events for the community of Las Vegas. There are many exciting events being planned for the next few months. The “Jingle Mingle” is planned for Saturday December 10, 2016. The “Love Win’s” Valentines Dance is planned for Saturday February 11, 2017. There are always at least one active event and one social event each month.
