Seven queer black women who are changing the game

We’re sending a little bit of love to these BAME babes, because why the hell not?

The black queer community is killing it at the moment. While we know there’s so much more to do in terms of representation, we wanted to take a minute to celebrate a few of our favourite black celesbians who are not only on top of their game but changing it too.

Lena Waithe

God’s plan.

The award-winning writer and actor has been on the scene for a while now, but really caught our attention on Netflix’s Master Of None, and with her new show The Chi. There’s so much to love about Lena Waithe – her style, her words, everything. We couldn’t be more proud of everything she’s doing, and are so excited to see what the future holds for this talented woman.

Janelle Monáe

We were beaming with joy here at DIVA when Janelle came out in her Rolling Stone interview as queer. We can’t stop listening to her bisexual anthem, Make Me Feel, and her new women loving women hit Pynk has made us all want to start a queer dance party. We have nothing but love for this amazing performer.

Amber’s Closet

My “go to” pose when idk what to do🤷🏽‍♀️🤣

A YouTuber and entrepreneur, Amber is nothing less than a spectacular role model to her many, many, many subscribers. From motivational videos, to an impressive style game, if you’re not watching Amber’s channel, you’re seriously missing out! Amber fan already? Make sure you pick up a copy of DIVA’s June issue for an exclusive interview.

Ari Fitz

Ari’s career goes way beyond the small screen and her huge following. The creator/model has been killing it recently and there’s no doubt there's no going back with this one. Come for the hilarious videos on YouTube and stay for the hot pics on Instagram. Fangirling? Us too.

Samira Wiley

Samira first captured our hearts as Poussey in Orange Is The New Black, and is now smashing it with her performance in The Handmaid’s Tale. She’s funny, she’s sexy, she’s every queer woman's dream girl – let’s face it. The sky’s the limited for Samira.

Robin Roberts

American journalist and TV personality Robin Roberts first came out in 2005 after revealing her partnership with Amber Laign. Robin has been member of the Good Morning America family since 2005 and has been an inspiration to us all ever since.

Wanda Sykes

Anyone here peed their pants because of this woman? Yep, guilty as charged. The hilarious comedian tells the most hilarious stories about her wife and kids as well just the struggles of being a black lesbian. We love us some Wanda.

Roxane Gay

Roxane Gay is one of the most valuable voices of our generation. From her bestselling book, Bad Feminist to her personally painful memoir, Hunger, this woman is a talent that cannot be reckoned with. If you haven’t read one of her books, you need to pick up a copy… like, yesterday.

We know there are so many other black lesbians and bisexuals out there. Who are some of your favourites? Tell us! We’d love to know…
