Sapphic period drama The Favourite dominates BAFTA shortlist

Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone up for awards for their fabulous new queer film

The hotly anticipated BAFTA nominations have been announced and there's great news for queer film fanatics. Sapphic period dramedy The Favourite, starring the exquisite Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone, has been shortlisted in a staggering 12 categories.

This gripping tale of lust, lies and lady-loving is up for Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, Make Up & Hair and Editing. Plus Yorgos Lanthimos is in the running for the Director award, and Olivia Colman is a contender for Leading Actress for her incredible performance as Queen Anne. Meanwhile, Hollywood icons Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone have both been both nominated for Supporting Actress for their brilliant portrayals of Lady Sarah and Abigail, romantic rivals for HRH’s affections.

We spoke to Rachel and Emma about playing queer parts, same-sex love scenes and the importance of strong female characters onscreen. Grab the January issue of DIVA to read the complete interview, available now via the links below.
