“It’s a compliment, but it’s not real” said the star.
Ruby Rose has laughed off the idea of girls “turning gay” for her and says while she finds it flattering, it’s “not rea.l” The DJ, actress and model has been something of a household name in Australia thanks to her work with MTV, but achieved global stardom last year after starring as Stella Carlin in season three of Orange Is The New Black.
Within days of it hitting Netflix, Ruby’s Instagram followers shot up by more than five million and article after article chronicled “sexually confused straight girls” who lost their minds over the 30-year-old star. Now, in a new interview with Galore magazine, the two-time DIVA and Curve cover star has laughed off the suggestion that she’s caused straight girls to question their sexuality and said: “When people say to me that I turned them gay, I just laugh.”
“That’s not really even a possibility,” she went on. “I just think that, as human beings, we are drawn to what we can’t have.” She added: “We are drawn to fantasy over reality, and often are in love with an idea of a situation rather than the reality of it. I think people like the idea of ‘turning gay for someone’, but it’s not actually that simple. Ultimately, the statement is just a form of endearment or a compliment, but it’s not real.”
Ruby also talked about people who mistake her for Justin Bieber, saying that while it’s a compliment, she doesn’t think they look anything alike. “If I’m going for a skate and I have a hat on, people say ‘Oh, you look like Justin’. And we do dress very similarly, but facial structure-wise, I feel like we don’t look anything alike. [But] it’s funny that sometimes we wear the same thing to the same place, and we’re like, ‘Aww man, why are we doing this to ourselves?’”
