PACT: “We actively recruit adopters from the LGBT communities”

Find out more about adoption from Parents And Children Together (PACT)

At PACT we are all about building and strengthening families! Last year we placed 87 children with 62 families and this year we want to help find even more vulnerable children the forever family they so deserve.

In order to do this, we are constantly searching for people who could give a secure and loving home to a child in care. As part of our work looking for potential parents, we actively recruit adopters from the LGBT community and have done so for the last few years.

All PACT’s social workers are trained in LGBT awareness and we run a special service for LGBT adopters from our office in Brighton. This has led to more LGBT people choosing to fulfil their dreams of starting a family through adopting with PACT. Indeed 16 percent of people who adopted with us last year were from the LGBT community. Having one in six adopters from the LGBT community is a source of great pride for us.

Mark and Laurence adopted a brother and sister, aged eight and six, through PACT in 2016. The couple said they chose to adopt through PACT because of the support and training it offered before, during and post-adoption, and because of the agency’s experience of placing children with LGBT adopters. They said:

“We couldn’t imagine our lives without children now and it all started with an initial enquiry with PACT. This has been an amazing journey for us and if it is something that you are considering when the time is right for you, PACT will be there to hold your hand throughout every stage.”

PACT adopter champions Karen and Charmaine who have two adopted daughters, the youngest of whom they adopted through PACT last year, also encouraged anyone considering adoption to get in touch with PACT to find out more. Karen said:

“Adoption really has shaped my life. It is, without doubt, the most incredible journey I have ever been on and my wife and I now have the most beautiful life with our two adopted daughters.

“PACT run regular adoption information events which are a great way to meet others thinking about adopting, as well as hear from people like me and my wife about what it's all about. They can be a very reassuring opportunity to ask all those questions you have been thinking about and find out the next step.”

PACT has a number of information events coming up this month including Brighton on 5 December, Reading on 12 December and London on 14 December. These are free to attend but please do book a place in advance by calling 0300 456 4800.
