The Sundance Film Festival is underway in Park City, Utah and we have the list of films that will make it onto your radar.
IT’S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR! No, no, no. THAT time has come and gone but if you are a movie buff like I am , the beginning of the new year brings us award season and the start of the film festival circuits around the world. While half of Hollywood hung around for the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) Awards last weekend, the other half took to the slopes of Park City, Utah for what is said to be an unforgettable line-up at the Sundance Film Festival.
The star- studded week-long festival is drawing to a close on February 1st and has screened almost 120 films. Among the genres that were presented, the LGBT category seemed to grow in strength from the previous year.
Below are some lesbian and bisexual titles that I suggest you keep a look-out for as they make their way through the 2015 film festival circuit.
The Summer of Sangaile
Holland, Lithuania, France. Written and directed by Alente Kavaite. – Filled with love and encouragement, this film follows seventeen-year-old Sangaile who is fascinated with aviation and the world of stunt flying. While spending a summer at her parent’s lakeside villa she comes across young Auste. The two share a summer of teenage love and find out each other’s intimate secrets.
The Amina Profile
Canada. Directed by Sophie Deraspe. The world has become fascinated in online dating. It is becoming easier to meet new people from all over the world. That is for Sandra in Montreal and Amina, a Syrian-American. Flirtatious attraction brings these two women closer and after some encouragement from Sandra, Amina launches a blog called “A Gay Girl in Damascus.” She becomes a star blogger and receiving negative attention from certain people. When Syria enters the Arab uprising of 2011, Sandra learns of Amina’s kidnapping, and soon the search for Amina turns global.
Tig
U.S.A. Directed by Kristina Goolsby and Ashley York. Written by Jennifer Arnold. This new documentary explores the life of out comedian Tig Nataro and how it transforms before our eyes. Her life is full of twists and turns, ups and downs, all while she is dealing with falling in love and battling a life-threatening illness.
Grandma
U.S.A. Written and directed by Paul Weitz. With a fantastic cast, this film can do no wrong. When 18-year-old Sage shows up on her grandmother’s doorstep, Elle Reid has her little life thrown into a daylong whirlwind. The two go on a journey that causes Elle to revisit her past and come to terms with the things that happened while Sage attempts to confront and take control of her future. Cast: Lily Tomlin, Julia Garner, Marcia Gay Harden, Judy Greer, Laverne Cox and Sam Elliot.
