Former model Maavia Malik appeared on Lahore-based private channel, Kohenoor News, on Friday. Malik has received substantial online support, including from BBS journalise Shiraz Hassan.
Despite being a predominantly conservative, Muslim country, the Pakistani Senate passed a bill recently protecting trans people. The bill includes protection from abduction, harassment, sexual assault, and penalties for denying them property insurance and education. Some universities have responded by offering free tuition to trans students.
The Senate also unanimously approved a bill assigning protective rights to trans people, allowing them to be legally recognised as the gender with which they identify, without undergoing medical examination.
