Award-winning playwright Trey Anthony explores the complexities of mother-daughter relationships.
Just in time for Mother’s Day, the award-winning playwright and trailblazing queer woman of color, Trey Anthony, will be premiering her new show on May 7 at the Factory Studio Theatre.
Presented by Trey Anthony Studios, How Black Mothers Say I Love You is inspired by the real stories of the tough decisions women of color have had to make for their families.
The main character Daphne, is a mother who leaves her children behind in Jamaica to come to Canada for work. Anthony based the character on real life stories about Jamaican and Afro-Caribbean mothers leaving their children in order to make a better life for them. Anthony’s mother was one of these many women.
“The play breaks down barriers and exposes the fact that motherhood isn’t at all the love and fluff as we wish it to be. The sacrifice of loving a child by leaving, learning to love a child who’s gay, learning to love a child in any other way than what you know; these are honest choices our own mothers and grandmothers were forced to make,” Anthony says.
Before the premiere, Anthony has invited one hundred girls of color from low-income families to attend the play. Known as the #100Girls initiative, the attendees will be given the chance to explore the world of theater.
