The rapper opens up about being outed in the press and playing Emmeline Pankhurst in a hip-hop musical
With tattoos creeping above her neckline, bubblegum pink hair and stacks of rainbow wristbands, RoxXxan looks every inch the queer icon. “I call myself a tomboi,” she tells me, in officially the huskiest voice I’ve ever heard, as we hang out in a trendy Soho coffee shop. “I don’t feel like I’m a stud and I’m definitely not a femme.”
The truth is, there’s nobody quite like Birmingham-born RoxXxan on the music scene right now. She’s uber talented, andro-chic and unapologetically gay AF. “There’s so many girls like me that just want to feel represented, like it’s ok to be them.” Her positivity is infectious: “I love women. Not just because I fancy them, but I think women are amazing. We are actual Gs, for real. #Women!” She’s so earnest and open-hearted, you feel you could ask her anything. “I have no filter,” she confirms. Her speech is peppered with this kind of Insta-speak, fitting considering her Instagram page (@rotriplex) is bursting with awesome shots, documenting everything from her unique sense of style to her LGBT pride. When I compliment her feed she chuckles, “It takes me about 69.5 pictures just to get that one. Don’t believe in the ‘gram!”
She’s currently in a highly Instagrammable relationship with artist and model Jade Laurice. “She’s beautiful. She uses Instagram right, talks about mental health, we’re on the same page.”
