Playwright and screenwriter Marja-Lewis Ryan announced as The L Word showrunner

L Word reboot one step closer to becoming a reality

According to Hollywood Reporter, playwright and screenwriter Marja-Lewis Ryan has been announced as showrunner and Executive Producer of the cult lesbian series, which – for the moment – remains in development.

Speaking to Hollywood Reporter, Ryan said: “Ilene and the original L Word made me believe that my voice mattered.”

“I am beyond excited for the opportunity to usher in the next generation of diverse queer people. I couldn’t imagine a better time to make this show.”

The L Word creator Ilene Chaiken will also be Executive Producer alongside Ryan and original stars Jennifer Beals, Katherine Moennig and Leisha Hailey.

Whispers of a return to the West Coast originally began after Chaiken tagged cast members in a tweet earlier this year which read simply: “So excited! Can’t wait…!”.

Chaiken serves as showrunner on Fox drama Empire, which according to the same article, is the reason she won’t be taking on a larger role on the long (long, long…) anticipated reboot of the lesbian drama.

It looks like fans might have to wait that little bit longer to find out when those girls in tight dresses will be back on their screens…
