Legendary Lesbian Feminist writer, Jill Johnston Dies
Just days after being named a finalist in Curve‘s First Annual Lesbian Awards, in the October 2010 Special 20th Anniversary Collector’s Edition, legendary lesbian feminist author Jill Johnston has died. Johnston, whose weekly column for the Village Voice incisively documented the lesbian, feminist revolution of the 1960s and ’70s, was 81. She is survived by her wife, Ingrid Nyeboe, who told the New York Times that Johnston died Saturday at Hartford Hospital, near their home in Connecticut, from complications from a stroke she suffered earlier this month. Though her muckraking days were behind her, Johnston will always be revered for her challenging (some say militant) 1973 tome, Lesbian Nation: The Feminist Solution as well as her long-running column.
