Peeking Back into the Dating World, Part II

Around mid-November, I started chatting online with this Southerner that pulled me in with the idea of whiskey and country karaoke. We made a date to meet for drinks on my birthday, which was also my last day of interning and I planned on staying up all night celebrating the two momentous occasions.

But, alas, it turned out to be a celibate celebration as the Southerner’s friend required attention and we were unable to meet. Instead, my gay boyfriend Gordo and I drank whiskey vinegars and went through my list of potential dates for the upcoming weeks.

First, there was the geeky rocker non-profit director who seemed more like friend material than someone I’d date but was cute enough to sleep with at least once so I figured I’d give it a shot.

Second, there was the young art student with an ill-tempered yet lovable Volvo, hedonist tendencies and a love of wine.

Next, there was the Southerner with an accent and a penchant for whiskey.

And lastly, there was the music teacher who wasn’t really a date but more of a meet and greet to be friends kind of thing but, since we met on a dating website, I’m taking artistic liberties and calling it a date.

The night before, my friend Wheely had decided number Two was going to be the winner and at my birthday dinner Costello agreed. But two whiskey vinegars in, Gordo deviated from the others and voted for the Southerner. Following their advice, I pursued friendships with One and Four and possible sex with Two and Three.

The morning after my birthday – after sleeping in until noon – I emailed the four of them to set up dates for the coming week. I invited One to roller skating night with my bowling team, Two and I decided it would be fun to get dressed up and go to proper English tea, Three was excited to hear me impersonate Dolly Parton at karaoke and Four was coming to the weekly Movies and Mulled Wine night at my apartment.

Did I mention this was the beginning of two weeks of finals for law school?

The sacrifices I make for this blog.

Roller skating came first, as it was a part of my three day birthday bonanza. The bowling team and I showed up first, which was a good thing considering it took me awhile to tie my skates and figure out how to use them without dying. One – who is genderqueer and goes by the gender neutral pronouns ze/zir – and zir friends showed up about half an hour later and we made our way around the vintage track, discussing the spectacular pipe organ that serenaded us and the even more spectacular mullet haircut of the man playing it.

Luckily for my poor aching thighs that had done too many squats that morning at the gym, the rink closed early and we all had to stop skating and commence bar hopping. One’s friends had to go home, so ze rode with me in my car and gave me only the appropriate amount of sarcastic crap when I got us lost twice on our one mile trip.

We left the bar at midnight and I gave ze a ride to zir apartment, which is hilariously only three blocks away from mine. When we got there, ze thanked me for the ride and awkwardly said, “I’d invite you to see my apartment but it’s late and I know you have a presentation early tomorrow.”

“It’s not that late,” I replied with a smirk as I parked my car.

To be continued …
