Arcane is set in a world without homophobia. The main romance is between two women who defy gender norms, and none of their romance focuses on coming out or being queer. They are hinted at being a butchfemme pairing, to be compared to the real world equivalent, but the femme character, Caitlyn, suggests leaning towards being an androgynous femme, dismantling the femme-passes-as-straight stereotype often seen in representation. Their queer identities and expressions never define them in the story. For cast and crew, Amanda Overton is a lesbian writer on the show, and some actors have confirmed themselves as queer, such as Katy Townsend.
