Long Snows Moon by Stacey Darlington is a lesbian romance about destiny, accepting our true nature, and the guidance we need to do it. It’s a wonderful and deep story about fortitude, courage and maturity, what everybody needs to face their future, to accept the consequences of their acts, and to be able to change.
In this beautiful journey of self-discovery, we meet two women whose lives are intimately related. Jameson is the daughter of an Indian woman and a man who loved and respected Indians; so she’s got a path made for her—a path full of wisdom, learning and knowledge,as well as a gift that will bring her moments of utter happiness and deep sadness. This is something she accepts completely, knowing the importance of her mission, even though she keeps fighting against some of its implications.
On the other side, Devon has it all, but there hasn’t ever been a human being more lonely or miserable: Her marriage is a disaster. Her relationship with her mother is as shallow as her life.The only things that bring her some relief are Moon, a hybrid wolf and Devon’s only friend, and liquor, which is destroying her life and numbing an essential part of her.

A trip made with her mother, Anelise, and Claire, a woman with whom Anelise has a special relationship that innocent teenage Devon didn’t really understand at the moment, will change Devon’s life forever, when at fifteen she met that weird girl called Jameson who made her feel so many new things. But it is Devon’s need to escape from her life many years later which will bring her back to Elk’s Pass Sundries just to discover that Jameson is still waiting for her, willing to help her to save herself, only if she really wants it. And maybe, she can help Devon find love in the process. Nonetheless, Devon won’t accept the implications of Jameson’s presence in her past, present and future until she falls into the deepest of holes.
There are moments in your life when you’re looking for something that you don’t even know what it is, but you know there’s a hole inside you that needs to be filled. Long Snows Moon is the story of someone who denies herself truth because she dulls her senses to stop feeling and therefore, to stop hurting. What makes Devon’s journey relatable is her need for internal peace, her doubts, and her pain. But Jameson is an approachable character too, because she’s not who she is simply due to her birth; she’s the result of intelligence, love, suffering and painful experiences that molded her to a more perfect being, able to help those who are lost.
Besides learning about animal totems and their significance, the detail I enjoyed most about this book was how it showed the importance of those who cross our path in life and the impact their decisions have on us, even when we’re not aware of it. Long Snows Moon says that if we take a look to our past, we can recognize that impact. And sometimes those special people in our lives, as in Devon and Jameson’s case, aren’t even humans; but you can still feel the bond as deeply as any other in your life.
Real and human characters with weaknesses that you can relate to; a story full of mystery, surprises and magic; and wonderful messages are what you’ll find in Long Snows Moon, a book that for me has been a special and very welcome journey.
