Readers Wanted: Meet Our Editor Sure, it’s too soon for Dinah Shore, but that doesn’t mean you can’t rock the desert with other dykes and meet Curve’s executive editor Diane Anderson-Minshall at Palm Springs’ Second Annual Lesbian Book Festival at Casitas Laquita Resort February 14-17. The Valentine’s Day weekend events include author signings, readings, cocktail shindigs, and, of course, the kind of pool parties that Palm Springs made famous (just a month earlier than Dinah Shore!). It’s one of the rare places where you can sport a bikini and hang with 17 hot lesbian authors, including Anderson-Minshall (author of Blind Leap), Catherine Friend (Hit By a Farm), Lee Lynch (Sweet Creek), Rose Beecham (Grave Silence), and the ever popular Radcylyffe (whose new book, Lonely Hearts Club, will debut in February). Even better? Events are free. (For more info check out casitaslaquita.com.)
If you can’t make it to SoCal, Anderson-Minshall will be at a bevy of events soon including:
FEB. 6 at San Francisco’s Main Library (at 100 Larkin St.) where Anderson-Minshall will join six other queer authors from diverse backgrounds presenting their genre fiction ranging from romance and adventure to mystery with a lesbian/queer focus. Co-sponsored by the Gay and Lesbian Center, the event will include authors Anna Furtado, Gabrielle Goldsby, Karin Kallmaker, JLee Meyer, Ursula Steck and Diane and Jacob Anderson-Minshall. Think of it as a middle-aged Sister Spit!
FEB. 7 at Books Inc., the West’s oldest independent bookseller, to see Anderson-Minshall read from Blind Leap (a book about a well-known gay director taking a header off the Golden Gate Bridge). Books Inc. is located in the legendary Castro district of San Francisco (hey bring your best gay guy friend too, he’ll be right at home). 7:30 pm at 2275 Market St. San Francisco. Get more info at booksinc.net.
FEB. 28 at In Other Words, the legendary feminist bookstore in Portland, Ore. (inotherwords.org), where she’ll be joined by advice columnists Lipstick & Dipstick, trans author Jacob Anderson-Minshall and novelist Gabrielle Goldsby for a night of romance, advice, murder and transfeminism.
MARCH 4 (TBD) Both Anderson-Minshall authors will be speaking at Outside In, a Portland, Ore. organization (outsidein.org) that addresses the needs of homeless youth and other low-income and marginalized people as they move toward self-sufficiency.
MARCH 15 when she’ll be headlining the Lesbian Genre Fiction Authors’ Tour at the Main Library in Hayward, Calif. (library.ci.hayward.ca.us). She’ll be performing alongside lesbian authors Karin Kallmaker, Ursula Steck, JLee Meyer and Anna Furtado.
MAY 8 –11 at the Sixth Annual Saints & Sinners Literary Festival in New Orleans (sasfest.org), where she’ll be speaking alongside luminaries like Dorothy Allison, Jewell Gomez, Elizabeth Whitney, Michelle Tea and Val McDermid. Workshops, panels, readings and parties galore are sure to delight writers and lit lovers alike and the French Quarter makes the perfect locale for literary revelry.
JULY 31-AUG. 3 at the 2008 Golden Crown Literary Society Conference (gclscon.com), a festival featuring the best in lesbian lit aimed at readers and authors alike. This year the festival will be held at the world-famous Sheraton Wildhorse Pass Resort in the Sonoran Desert of Phoenix, Arizona. You can join Anderson-Minshall and dozens of lesbian authors including keynote speaker Katherine V. Forrest for workshops and parties as well as swimming, spa treatments and horseback riding (and if you’re feeling lucky, there’s a casino next door).
