Chicago is known for its deep-dish pizza, but on Nov. 29, it will be known more for its chocolate and philanthropy. The annual World of Chocolate, an event to support the AIDS foundation of Chicago (aidschicago.org), will hold its delicious affair at the Hilton Chicago. The past few years have boasted fountains, a 20-foot tower and even a Wonka-esque river of chocolate.
Chris Matthews, director of fundraising events, thinks this year will be better than ever. “We’ve moved to a bigger space this year to allow for more growth of the event,” says Matthews. Last year 1,500 people attended; the goal for this year is 1,700.
Matthews is especially excited about this year’s lineup. “The chocolate displays will be very interactive,” he says. Among the performances in the “chocolate theatre” are product demonstrations, chocolate body casting and body painting.
Even with the chocolate draped bodies and open bar (specialty: chocolate martini), this is still a relatively tame event. It starts at 5:30 p.m. and ends at 9:00 p.m. No need to get all dressed up, it’s business casual or as Matthews says, “Holiday chic.”
Beyond the world of “chocolate theatre” lies a delicious array from Chicago’s finest chocolatiers, live music and a holiday gift bazaar. Local celebrity judges will be on-hand to give awards to the best chefs.
The proceeds from the event support grants for Chicago-based AIDS organizations. Some of the proceeds go to The Global Grants Initiative, which gives money for international projects. The rest of the money pays for grants written by local AIDS organizations to support community programs. Last year the event raised $150,000. This year, the goal is to net $200,000.
Tickets range from $75 in advance ($100 day at the door), to the $20,000 Premier Sponsorship package, which offers 20 tickets, red lapel pins, a plethora of advertising, sponsorship of a tree and the opportunity to serve as a celebrity judge for the night.
So sample some delicious chocolate, peruse the Holiday Bazaar and support the foundation.
