Michigan Women's Music Festival Lisa Vogel was only nineteen when she came up with the idea for the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival. Tired of traveling all over the country to hear a variety of sounds, Vogel decided to bring all of what was just coming to be called "women's music" into one arena. Now, twenty-two years later, Vogel's dream is a thriving entity. With around seven thousand participants, the annual festival is a tremendous opportunity for beginning artists, as well as half the bill," explains Vogel. "That's risky sometimes, but ultimately there's more risk in less diversity." Though Vogel is undoubtedly one of the most influential women on the music scene, she is quick to give credit where it is due. "The vision that keeps [the Festival] moving forward has been ever changing for the last twenty years, stimulated by each festival and the women who work on it and come to it."
