LESLEY SEACRIST
A theatre filled with hair gel, a couple mullets and about a hand-full of men. Can you guess what the show is? If you can’t guess, than you have never been to a lesbian comedy show.
There were more leather coats than a cattle ranch in Texas. But there were even more laughs in the audience at the Queer Queens of Comedy show on at the El Rio Theatre in Santa Cruz on March 10th.
Featuring four unique lesbian comedians, the seats were packed full of anyone and everyone who wanted to crack up to the styles of Poppy Champlin, Karen Williams, Dana Goldberg and Jennie McNulty.
With only a stool and mic, these four gals molded the audience like putty, making them bend over, clap their hands and open their mouth more than humanly possible. I even found myself at one point wondering with worry that I might pee in my pants. Luckily, I didn’t, but if I did, I would understand that there are some pitfalls for good comedy.
Every woman came on stage with her own different bag of tricks. Karen Williams, sauntered into the spot light with a figurative bag that had an embroidered red felt “Fuck You” sewn on it. You can’t buy that kind of gumption. I’ll give you a little taste of her bit. “I am postmenopausal and don’t give a fuck.” Yup, she says everything that you wish you could say, but with excellent timing and dry execution.
The MC of the evening was none other than Poppy Champlin, who won over everyone with lots of audience participation, high energy and a lovely rendition of “And I am Telling You” but about not going to the gym. She can sing and keep the ladies singing with laughter.
Dana Goldberg wooed the crowd with her cheeky, pun filled humor and gorgeous curly hair. Oh, maybe that was just me. She has really good hair. And Jennie McNulty, along with other good-natured jokes casually commented on the inner funnies of labels, like domestic partnership. “It sounds like we clean houses together.”
The two hours of comedy was nothing less that a relaxing massage that released that pesky knot in all of our backs with the medicine of laughter and fun and knowing a little too much about a comedians sexual escapades. But that’s all in the spoon full of what makes lesbian comedians on the top of their game. !Viva el Dildo y Aqua Net!
