We boogie on down to catch the eye of the cutie in the corner. We boogie on down to imitate Beyoncé. We even boogie on down in front of the mirror when we are alone — be honest. But how many of us just boogie on down for our health?
Leave the stilettos at home and break out the sneakers on the 24th of February, 2007, because the Spirit of Women Hospital Network is throwing a huge dance party: the Day of Dance for Cardiovascular Health, part of the yearlong “Red Shoe for Action Initiative. Booties are going to be bumping in 50 plus communities across America to spread the awareness of the impact of heart disease on women’s lives.
“Having fun and being healthy doesn’t have to be mutually exclusive — we hope women will join us for Day of Dance to have fun, discover a new passion, embrace the goals of the Red Shoe for Action Initiative, and end up healthier, with healthier families, in the long run,” said Tanya Abreu, President and National Program Director, Spirit of Women Hospital Network.
Cardiovascular disease is the #1 killer of American women, and nearly 500,000 daughters, mothers, friends and partners die each year, according to the American Heart Association.
With such startling statistics, it is important for women to understand the different methods to curb the main contributors like high cholesterol (whether from poor diet or heredity) and absence of effective exercise.
Over 50 hospitals will host the festivities that are going to last four to six hours and will be chalk-full of dancing, guest speakers, healthy cooking tips, screenings and other activities that are veered towards heart disease prevention.
"Our hope for the new Red Shoe for Action Initiative is that women will truly recognize what they need to do, all year long, to prevent the chance of developing heart disease or having a stroke themselves,” said Abreu.
