Lesbian comedian Julie Goldman’s been cracking up the masses since her first stand-up gig at the tender age of 15. She currently works as a writer for New York City drag king Murray Hill, and as a member of the politically minded comedy troupe Laughing Liberally. If you can’t catch Goldman live in the Big Apple, look for her at your next LGBT film festival: you may have seen her as butch heartthrob Drea McClay in The D Word, a New York City parody of that famous Sapphic soap, or more recently as Linda in Erin Greenwell’s film Mom. Look for her next in The Big Gay Show, a new Logo series co-produced by Rosie O’Donnell. Learn more about Goldman (and hear some hilarious music) on her Web site at julie-goldman.com
I’ve heard that you and Mom director Erin Greenwell are friends. Did she write the part of Linda especially with you in mind? Erin and I are great friends; it’s true. I met her 10 years ago auditioning for a movie she attempted to make then. She made the trailer but didn’t make the whole film. But it brought us together as friends and collaborators over the years. She did not write Linda especially for me, but I think in her mind she knew I could do it and add a special je ne se lez if you will ... Erin is great at allowing us to improvise or make changes as we may see them. And there was a lot of that. But mainly, we did the script as it was written.
Have you and Erin worked on anything else together? We also worked on my video [for my song] Monogamous Slut; Erin edited and directed it. She has also done a million things as far as graphics and all that kind of stuff for me over the years. And I have tried to help her in whatever ways I can: holding a light or doing voice-overs or whatever. We have just written a script together and I look forward to working wiht her more and more in the future.
Monogamous Slut is a great song. Do you ever perform it live? I do perform Slut live occsasionally. Slut is technically Indigo Etheridge’s song. She is my lesbian folk singer character. I haven’t performed as her in a few years, But Slut and Indigo are going to make a comeback in our next feature: Co-Dependent-Obsessive-Love Ain’t-So-Bad-So-Leave-the-Window-Open: The Real Indigo Etheridge Movie. Can’t wait to see it! So how did you first begin working as a comedian and actress? I started doing stand up when I was 15. I met a comedian at a Jewish Youth Group convention, named Tony V. I asked him how I could get started in comedy and he invited me to come do five minutes at The Comedy Connection in Boston, so I did. and I ’ve been hooked every since.
Most of your work is in LGBT productions what would you say was the most mainstream project you’ve had in recent years? I think the most mainstream thing I have done is my little two scenes in The Sopranos as Dr. Kupferberg’s daughter Saskia.
Any idea where people will be able to see The D Word next? Not sure where The D Word is at, but you can go to thedword.com.
I saw that you and [Mom co-star] Emily Burton are going to be in Lee Friedlander’s new film Out At The Wedding together. Have you worked with her on other sets as well? I worked with Emily on The D Word ... and hopefully Indigo in the future. I think shes great and hopefully we’ll be seeing a lot of her.
When will The Big Gay Show be airing? What is about? The Big Gay Show will be airing in late fall I believe... It’s a sketch comedy show ... sort of like a gay Mad TV if you will.
