Nail Art Goes Postmodern

Whether you always have your nails professionally manicured or eschew anything more than clear polish, Frutezia’s Fresh Style at Your Fingertips nail art exhibit will definitely excite your artistic sensibilities. Not convinced? You’ll change your mind after seeing some of the winning designs from this nail art competition. These five winning designers, each of whom received one thousand dollars from Frutézia as a prize, push the boundaries of nail art. Like Beauty Editor Judy Lessin of NAILS Magazine, one of the competition’s judges, you’ll be surprised and pleased by innovation and whimsy of these talented designers.

Nancy Smoyer’s gothic “Snake’s Lace” shows how nail art is much more than that saccharine daisy you had painted on your big toe in seventh grade. In fact, Smoyer’s entry, which she created as an “anti-bridal” design for an after party at beauty salon Studio 911 in Pennsylvania, is a stunning example of how nail art has evolved way beyond seventh grade chic. The other winning designs, which include Rachel Ouellette’s “Grape Ladies” and the wonderfully named Jacqueline “Jackee O” Oliphant’s “Hidden Jewels” further demonstrate the (hitherto) unrecognized variety and potential of modern nail art.

The exhibition, which is on tour this summer and fall, offers treats to tempt even the most manicure-shy among you. During the free exhibit, you’ll be served “exotic” finger foods along with Frutézia, the low alcohol wine beverage that sponsored the contest. Even better, you’ll get the opportunity to receive art designs performed by local nail technicians. Who knows? Maybe that painted daisy’s not so seventh grade after all.
