When I was a plaid-skirted sixth-grader at Drummoyne Public School gossiping about last night’s episode of Neighbours, the soap that introduced a frizzy-headed blonde named Kylie Minogue to Australian television, I could not have dreamed that we would someday share Pride together. And yet, last summer, it seemed every gay event had Kylie’s infamous “na-na-na” in thumping rotation. Neighbours’ most annoying starlet (if you don’t count Dannii Minogue or Natalie Imbruglia) has gone on to become an international superstar — and a gay favorite.
Now, with the double CD set Ultimate Kylie and the DVD Kylie Minogue: Body Language Live (http://www.kylie.com), which includes footage from her remarkable £1 million Money Can’t Buy show at London’s Hammersmith Appolo, a behind-the-scenes doc and more, I can marvel to my heart’s content that the “Locomotion” object of ridicule (really! we all made fun of her back then!) has grown into a defiant, leggy sexpot whose Brigitte Bardot locks, Romanesque features and penchant for white sequins light her up like a life-size sparkler on a stage immersed in aquarium blues and greens. She’s infinitely more interesting to look at than most American pop tarts, the danceability of her music can’t be beat, and I’m finally ready to admit that I can’t get her out of my head.
