Actress Jenna Mattison may have made Curve’s Top Ten Reasons We Love Her section, but her saucy, sexy, deadpan co-star in Fish Without a Bicycle gets an equal dose of our adoration for playing Vicky, the “oh-my-god-I’m-a-lesbian-in-love-with-my-best-friend” character we can all relate to. We asked Blanc, who is probably best known for her role of Kendra on the sci-fi series Dark Angel, about her new role as lesbian icon.
Q&A:
I thought your character was really engaging. What part of Vicky do you identify with? I identify with the vulnerability she feels even though she’s covering up and trying to save face.
Vicky’s a lovesick girl who admits she’s been in love with her best friend for a long time. Did you do research for the role? The research for this character was spending time with Jenna, trying to get to know her on a very personal level, and focusing on the qualities Jenna has that I find endearing.
Do lesbian moviegoers complain that you don’t get the girl? I think they’re OK with the outcome because the movie is about a girl trying to find herself and not about rejection.
I love that one critic called you the next Janeane Garofalo. How’s that make you feel? It makes me laugh, because it’s so far-fetched from who I really am, and the fact that I can pull it off on-screen is a huge compliment to me.
I’ve heard the movie called a female Swingers, a modern Chasing Amy, and a updated Kissing Jessica Stein. Which do you think is more appropriate? I think it’s accurate to say it’s the female version of Swingers because of the witty dialogue both films share.
You’re probably best known as Kendra on Dark Angel. How is Kendra different from Vicky? The first thing is their physical appearance; secondly, the age and maturity level of the characters are on a different scale; and, lastly, one character is dealing with the aftermath of the present, and the other is dealing with the present.
Did you have any concerns about playing a lesbian role? Absolutely not! I really wanted to explore playing a character dealing with different circumstances that I’ve had to deal with in my personal life. And it was an exciting experience for me.
