Writers Guidelines

Curve, the nation's best-selling lesbian magazine, spotlights all that is fresh, funny, exciting, controversial, and cutting-edge in the lesbian community. Our editorial content profiles lesbian heroes and icons, illuminates trends, and offers a lesbian and woman centered perspective on issues and events.

Curve welcomes freelance submissions, either in the form of a query letter or a full-length article. We encourage you to contact our editorial department with a story pitch before you write, rather than submit a complete story that is unsolicited.

Please note that Curve does not publish fiction, poetry, unsolicited first-person anecdotes and stories, book, music and web reviews (these are written in-house), or explicitly sexual material.

Feature articles generally fit into one of the following categories:

1. Celebrity profiles
Curve celebrity profiles feature lesbian, bisexual or straight women who are icons for the lesbian community (e.g., Ellen DeGeneres, Ani DiFranco, Lucy Lawless) or actively involved in coalition-building with the lesbian community (e.g., Oprah Winfrey). We prefer journalistic-style articles to a Q&A format, but will also consider Q&A submissions (please include a 200-300 word lead when submitting the latter).

2. Community segment profiles
(e.g., lesbian firefighters, drag kings, sports teams) Multiple interviews with a variety of women in different parts of the country representing a diversity of backgrounds will give a well-rounded tone to this type of article. The story should extrapolate several concrete themes and use interviewees' quotes to support these observations.

3. Non-celebrity profiles
Curve often educates readers about the activities of "unknown" or low-profile lesbian and bisexual activists and political leaders, athletes, filmmakers, dancers, writers, musicians, etc. Some of these profiles are full-length features; others are shorter profiles, for our "Out in Front" and "Curvatures" segments of the magazine.

4. Controversial issues
Curve seeks to spark a dialogue about issues that divide and unite us as a community, and the ways in which lesbians of different backgrounds fail to understand and support one another. We invite articles that explore an issue from several angles, incorporate multiple points of views, or offer concrete solutions. We are NOT interested in inflammatory articles that incite or enrage readers without offering a channel for action.

5. Trends
Curve explores community trends in a variety of areas, including sports, fashion, image, health, music, spirituality, and identity. Articles in this genre should offer concrete evidence that a trend is in motion, and incorporate multiple interviews.

6. Visual essays
Most of our fashion and travel pieces are developed and produced in-house. However, we welcome input from freelancers, and do sometimes publish outside work.

We encourage writers to enclose photographs or make suggestions for illustrations. Photos must be of professional quality; both color and b/w are acceptable. Please include the photographer's name and telephone number on the back of the photo, as well as a brief description identifying who and what is depicted.

If you would like to be considered for article assignments, please send a hard copy of your resume, recent article clips, and a cover letter that includes biographical information as well as specific topics you'd be interested in covering.

All submissions, query letters, and article clips should be sent to:
