DJ, tattooist and hip-hop artist Pegg Starr has her sights set on the stars.

On connecting through music: In a couple of my songs, I speak about drug addiction and being gay. Because there’s so many people dying everyday. I feel like they’re getting younger and younger [and] if I can have an influence and I speak about stuff that’s real, maybe I can help. A lot times people will go up to me after shows and say, “Oh, you wrote this song, and you made me think.” The fact that somebody else can relate to something that went on in my life…that makes it worth it.

On a highlight performance: One of my most memorable experiences was a fundraiser I did with Maxine Nightingale. It was awesome to experience another musician that has been around since the ’70s, because music has changed so much since then. I got to hang out and actually perform with someone who’s an icon from my favorite era of music.

On her tattoos: My friend used to laugh and say, “Oh, you put your name on you in case you forgot what your name is,” but I have a thing for stars. I feel that stars signify the sky and being free…I have a million more stars on my arms and legs.

On her drive: I always want more. Sometimes people can perceive that as a bad thing, but I feel like you can never stop learning. So every time that I get to the next plateau in my life…then I figure out different goals so that I always keep wanting more, just to keep growing.
