The Daily Gaydar: Portia DiRossi Says It's Hard to be a Vegan and Sheryl Swoopes' New Partner

Is being vegan harder than being gay? Portia Di Rossi thinks so. She talked veganism and Ellen to VegNews this month, saying, “Listen, I think it's more difficult to be vegan than gay. I think people have a harder time accepting it; people feel more uncomfortable with a vegan at their dinner table than they do a lesbian. It's confronting. It's kind of suggesting that what someone else is doing is bad or wrong, and it hits them on a more personal level…If somebody is setting there eating a steak watching you eat polenta, they're thinking that you're trying to preach to them or you're trying to convert them in some way. Whereas with being gay, I don't think anyone's concerned that that's the agenda. "Hey, Mom, you also have to be gay. I'm gay and so should you be!" Certainly when I told her that I was vegan, it forced her to look at her habits.” [AfterEllen]

Michele Bachman recently jumped up 14 points in the polls in New Hampshire. How? And why? Terribly concerning are not just her homophobic remarks but also the fact that Bachmann subscribes to the basic evangelical definition of a woman's role. Peter Bachmann, Dr. Bachmann's oldest brother said of Bachmann;s husband, "He is her godly husband...the husband is to be the head of the wife, according to God." That makes sense, seeing that she told the Living Word Christian Center in 2006, "The Lord says: Be submissive, wives. You are to be submissive to your husbands.” Here is a creepy photo of the charming couple: [Jezebel]

Happy Friday, here's a cuteness blast to kick off your weekend:

Don’t you think Emperor Tamarins kinda look like kitties? Like really cute, kinda crazy looking kitties? This doesn’t have anything to do with anything, but here are some Brockway Monkeys at the San Francisco Zoo falling in love with an ipod touch. Squee!! [Jezebel]

As we mentioned in our podcast earlier this week, Sheryl Swoopes has a new love—and he’s a man. The basketball star came out in 2005, telling the world she was in love with Alisa “Scottie” Scott, a former assistant coach for Swoopes’s former team, the Houston Comets. She has now announced that she is engaged to Chris Unclesho, a longtime friend. A little sad she’s not on playing for our team anymore, but we wish her the best. [AfterEllen]

Here at Curve headquarters, we are totally obsessed with the brilliant movie Bridesmaids. So, we are super excited to say a big congrats to Bridesmaides, our new favorite movie. Last Thursday the film surpassed Knocked Up as producer Judd Apatow’s highest grossing film to date. This makes the film a possible contender for the top-spot on the domestic female-fronted comedy list, and may just knock Sex and the City from the top spot (which grossed $152.6 million). Have you seen the film? Is it the best thing to come our way in ages? Do you totally expect to go home with a puppy at the next baby shower you attend? [AfterEllen]

Speaking of Sex and the City, the takings from the series and films are still a bit of a cash cow for actress Sarah Jessica Parker. According to Forbes.com, SJP tied with Angelina Jolie as Hollywood’s highest female earners last year, both making $30 million. Jolie earned hers thanks to the global success of Salt and The Tourist, which together brought in $580 million worldwide. Parker’s earnings mostly came from repeats of her hit TV show Sex And The City, which she also produced, and from the success of the Sex And The City sequel film, which took in $280 million worldwide. Nice work, ladies. [RadarOnline]
