Amber Heard Comes Out
The actor joins our team by bringing her girlfriend to the GLAAD Anniversary party, and we are happy to have her!
It has been a big year for Amber Heard. She stars as Johnny Depp’s love interest in the forthcoming film The Rum Diaries, she was number 13 on Maxim’s Hot 100 list, and then just last weekend she came out as a lesbian.
Heard came out in a big way, attending GLAAD’s 25th Anniversary party with her girlfriend of over two years, Tasya van Ree. When asked about her decision to come out she said, “I can't be a part of the problem. I hate the idea of a label just as much as anyone else but I'm with who I'm with, I love who I love...I personally think that if you deny something or if you hide something you're inadvertently admitting it's wrong. I don't feel like I'm wrong. I don't feel like millions of people are wrong because they love who they love or they were born how they were born."
She also praised GLAAD, noting that the organization makes it possible for people in the media to come out and feel protected.
When asked about her girlfriend, Heard said, “She’s so beautiful! I mean, you’d have to be crazy not to want to go out with her!"

Cheers, and good for her! A woman of great courage and integrity. I found her perspective to be most truthful for most of us and very uplifting. I especially liked her thoughts when she said, " I personally think that if you deny something or if you hide something you're inadvertently admitting it's wrong. I don't feel like I'm wrong..."
But, we musn't forget that many women are closeted because fear of rejection by their family, friends, associates/coworkers and community overall, and not because they want to deny or hide something. Some communities are more inclusive, while still, many communites across America aren't. Unfortunately, many Gay women and men don't feel protected/safe as Amber Heard, as it's noted in the article that Amber praised GLAAD, noting that the organization makes it possible for people in the media to come out and feel protected.
Yes, the Gay community has come a very long way, especially in entertainment/media and now with the repeal of the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy and the acceptance of Gay unions in some places, the future seems to be much brighter overall.... But, let's be understanding and sensitive toward our brothers and sisters who can't be as forward about their sexuality due to other factors, let's not few them as part of the problem or else the community will create a great divide; and that would surely hinder progress I believe, as many 'closeted' gays are great contributors in the Gay community.
Peace and Love
I tottally agree with Sweetluv! It's not easy in some places... We can only hope someday all of us can say it out loud without fear.! :-)
