Sweet Voluntour 2010: Get Down, Get Dirty, Make a Difference

Get away and give back at the same time with this lesbian cruise.

Now, you may not know much about me, but nothing makes me want to put on my best outfit and get down and dirty like lesbians in action. So, when I read about Sweet's Voluntour 2010 it was all I could do to keep myself from donning my favorite fishnets, garters and—digging in the garden. (What did you think I meant? This is an article for Curve not OnOurBacks, keep up.)

Many of us have felt overwhelmed by worldwide problems. Hurricane Katrina, the earthquake in Haiti, the rumored break-up of Angelina and Brad—the list goes on. The point is, we all want to do something to feel that we are putting a dent into the pillow that we call global issues. Last November, Sweet, the hot new lesbian travel company, hit the Caribbean to addresses just those worries. They took a boat full of lesbians and instead of littering their ports-of-call with broken hearts, they picked up garbage and helped healed some hearts. The Sweet volunteers hit places like New Orleans—where they planted 600 grasses in a marsh devastated by Hurricane Katrina—and Costa Maya, Mexico—where in a 45-minute contest, over 200 giant bags of garbage was cleared from Uvero Beach. Sweet effected more change in a short period of time than an episode of Extreme Makeover.

Sweet isn’t resting on laurels though. Sweet founder Shannon Wentworth, is embarking on a journey to lead community projects in different cities throughout the United States with the Live Sweet Voluntour 2010, with aims to make our Sapphic sisters touch even more lives this year. She's heading to Orlando, Florida (April 16-8), New York City and New Jersey (April 23-25) and Denver (April 30-May 2).

Wentworth is touring like a rock star of volunteerism, because, she says, “We’re spreading lesbian visibility in the United States, where it seems like every day people are voting on whether we deserve equal rights. The more we connect with people in our own backyard, the less likely they will be to vote against us.”

Let's face it, who would vote against a people so adept with power tools? They need us. Now it's your turn to get in on the sweet, sweet action. Instead of cuing up yet another L Word DVD and wishing you had a girlfriend, check out the event schedule or you can suggest a project to come to your hometown. If we’ve learned one thing it’s that nothing is hotter than a woman who gives.
