Girl Bars We Love

From vibey dives to upscale dance clubs, trendy girl-girl hangs have transformed the City of Angels into Sapphic-central.

It’s no secret that Los Angeles is known for its beautiful women and the lesbian community there is no exception. In fact, the City of Angels may have the highest volume of sexy dykes per square block in the entire country. But where do you go to find these sultry Sapphic sisters lezzin’ out in their natural habitat? Read on, my pretties.

What: Girlbar
Where: Ultra Suede, 661 N. Robertson Blvd., West Hollywood, Calif.
When: Fridays
Back in 1990, when “lesbian” was a word you whispered shyly to your fellow women’s volleyball teammates, Robin Gans and Sandy Sachs founded Girlbar with this vision: To provide the most exciting events, in the most elegant setting with the hottest women in town. Today, Girlbar remains the largest dance and entertainment club for lesbians in the United States. Music pumps while strobe lights pulse and smoke fills the air around sexy go-go girls gyrating on raised platforms. And with events like the sultry Black Bra Party, the hysterical Cocktails & Comedy and, for film buffs, Show Us Your Shorts, this is definitely not your queer aunt’s lesbian club.

What: Heat
Where: Here Lounge, 696 North Robertson Blvd., West Hollywood, Calif.
When: Thursdays
Girls, leave your flannel shirts and hiking boots at home for this one. Fuse Events creators Linda Fusco and Michelle Agnew have made sure that the crowd at Heat stays young, edgy and very, very sexy. It’s a formula for success and not a Thursday goes by without a line of lovely lesbos waiting to get into this trendy mix of cutting-edge DJs and big puffy sofas. And if you’re wondering what to wear…black is always the new black at this pre-weekend bash where schmoozey entertainment industry chicks blend easily with regular Janes in a pleasantly dichotomous environment of sweaty dance floors and laid-back lounges.

What: The Oxwood Inn
Where: 13713 Oxnard St, Van Nuys, Calif.
When: Whenever the Sapphic spirit moves you
Located in the San Fernando Valley, where lesbians buy houses, barbeque frequently and raise dogs, the Oxwood Inn is the valley’s oldest lesbian bar. For half a century, lesbians from 21 to 101 have enjoyed this low-key Valley hang for its darts, pool tables, juke box, abundant free parking and happy hour-priced drinks. But there’s more to the Oxwood Inn than the butch at the bar sporting a mullet and clad in her UPS uniform, this newly remodeled Valley landmark now features terrific karaoke, slick DJs, a great dance floor, live music by some of Los Angeles’ hottest LGBT artists and a gaggle of hot grrrls that prefer this delightful neighborhood bar to the trendiness of West Hollywood. So, if you’re looking to catch a band, watch a game on TV or enjoy a cocktail that won’t break your wallet, throw on some comfortable jeans and your favorite T-shirt and head to the Ox.

What: Platinum
Where: East/West, 8851 Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood, Calif.
What: Thursdays
Sophistication is the name of the game at this stylish girl-girl night, brought to you by Shannon K. Productions at East/West, Los Angeles’ most unique new queer club. Classic interior design is offset by original art and exquisite cocktails to create a cutting-edge environment infused with the upscale elegance of old Hollywood. But don’t let the fancy furniture and fine art fool you; there is a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere at East/West that is perfect for a first date, a small industry meet-and-greet or a fun hang with good friends.

What: Rehab
Where: O-Bar, 8279 Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood, Calif.
When: Sundays
After a long weekend of drinking, dancing and cruising hot lesbians, a girl needs to wind down, relax and cruise more hot lesbians…and, of course, continue to drink. Luckily, Shannon K. Prods has created the perfect club for the happily hungover grrrl who’s not ready to give up the party just yet. About the time you’re showing your Saturday night booty call the door, Rehab at O-Bar is beginning to swing into gear with mimosa and bloody mary specials and half-priced happy hour drinks. So, sit on the outdoor patio, sample delicious nibbles from O-Bar’s signature high-end comfort food menu and consume cocktails until the weekend is a blur of beautiful women and frenzied fun.

What: Truck Stop
Where: Here Lounge, 696 North Robertson Blvd., West Hollywood, Calif.
When: Fridays
Just when you thought West Hollywood was all class and sass, Fuse Events brings Truck Stop to the lesbian community—a wild, raunchy, rockin’ Lesbopalooza where the only thing sexier than the patrons, are the bartenders who hop onto the bar and perform sexy dances for the crazed audience. Truck Stop is a little dirty and a little flirty, mixing current dance faves with ’80s rock anthems and combining trash and trend in a way that is mucho sexy and a just little seedy. This is the place to don your leather stitch-up pants, Joan Jett T-shirt and the boots that cost more than your monthly car payment and strut your stuff, slumming in style at West Hollywood’s most outrageous lesbian night.
