Bring on the Butches
As a femme lesbian who loves butches, I am getting a little disenchanted by the number of ads showing two straight-looking women posed in awkward positions. I really appreciate Dani, but there are other sexy butches out there who are getting little notice in our male-identified society.

Lydia Fox, you are right on point! Just seeing honestly butch women in ads and on television would really make my day! I look forward to the time when the media has the courage and enlightenment to portray lesbians of every variety....letting us out of the box, as it were.
I have just recieved my first issue of Curve, and love it. So much information. I am somewhat new to this lifestyle, but I am committed to it. I have never seen Curve on the newsstands, I did not know until recently Curve exsisted.

Rocket world sometimes uses butch looking models, and I believe they advertise with Curve at times, so they market to the community, as well. There's a boi(ish) looking model on this page: http://www.rocketworld.org/creature_hoodie.htm
There was a great media study done on queer as folk & the L word. It found in the majority of the time gender queer females in the series were portrayed negatively, ended the study with real life gender queer lesbians who faced abuse for their gender expression, and ended with the question "will this new gay media create inter group conflict between gender queer gays/ lesbians and the empowered hetronormative community who are gay and les. Awesome study, made me watch the L word with different eyes!
olivia should plan a resort trip for the vallarta heat week
I actually wrote my senior paper in college on the representation of masculine women (butch) in ads within Curve Magazine. My small content analysis paper revealed there there weren't many if any representations of butch women and very very few of non-white women. My conclusion was that the world of advertising cares little for people who are considered ugly or threatening to the status quo and unfortunately Curve (along with all other magazines) need advertisers to exist. I think this lack of representation does in part account for the lowered self esteem of women who don't see themselves in advertisements within their own communities. There is a wonderful book called "Can't Buy My Love" that talks about the impact of advertising on the way people view themselves.
I totally agree! Butch is so sexy and I really wish we had more OUT Lesbians around my area. I live in southern Alabama and being the Bible Belt, it's just not a very OUT place to be.
I am kinda Femme and my partner (my Hubsbian) is butch..... she is actually gender queer and very hottt.... we are both OUT to our families, friends and at work...
We need to take control and come OUT in Southern Alabama.
We finally have a gay club here, it's about time.
Now I wish we could have gay and lesbian marriage here as well and more rights!
