New Resource For Transgender People
TheBody.com launches a new center and one-stop resource for empowering transgender health and lives, including HIV prevention and care.
Website TheBody.com has unveiled a new resource center for trans people, which offers one of the first and few dedicated online platforms catering to all aspects of HIV for people of transgender experience. The site aims to connect, empower and educate trans people who are currently suffering from misinformation or lack of information concerning trans health and daily life experiences.
The resource will offer a wide range of reliable original content, including reference materials, personal stories, news, and interviews from leading medical professionals and HIV advocates. "TheBody.com’s Resource Center for Trans People and HIV came from a vision to debunk many of the myths and fill knowledge gaps surrounding trans health and lives, bringing together in one place the best resources and information available on a range of trans health issues, including HIV,” said JD Davids, a trans male journalist and advocate who oversees the center as Partnerships Director for TheBody.com.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in five trans women in the U.S. are living with HIV, and trans people are three times more likely to become HIV positive than the general population. Transgender people—particularly trans people of color—are among the most marginalized, due to lack of health care, and economic opportunities.
"As a Latina trans activist living with HIV and working at the local level, the new Resource Center for Trans People and HIV on TheBody.com will be an invaluable resource to me and the communities I work with," said Jada Cardona, Executive Director of the transgender justice organization Transitions Louisiana and a health equity specialist with the Louisiana Office of Public Health.
Included in the online resources are:
- Video testimonials from a group of Louisiana-based trans women of color, who share advice and words of encouragement they would give to their younger selves
- Profiles of trans advocates making a difference, such as activist Cecilia Gentili
- A report on the paucity of data regarding the experiences and medical needs of transgender people in the U.S. living with HIV
- Timely news and analysis, such as this exploration of the effects of the Affordable Health Care Act (a.k.a. Trumpcare) on trans health
"TheBody.com has long been an outstanding, life-changing resource for the LGBTQ community," said Rebecca Bauer, Head of Content for Remedy Health Media, TheBody.com's parent company. "The Resource Center for Trans People and HIV represents an important extension of TheBody.com's historic role. It is an honor for us to responsibly present content that empowers and supports the journeys of people of trans experience."
