Rooney Mara Gets ‘Dragon Tattoo’

Rooney Mara will go Goth as the bisexual Lisbeth Salander in the American version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Big buzz has surrounded casting ever since the Swedish-language version started drawing crowds at US cinemas and earned $157 million worldwide, according to New York Daily News.Mara captured the role after “friending” director David Fincher on The Social Network, his film about the Facebook founders that also stars Justin Timberlake. Brad Pitt, who also previously worked with Fincher, was rumored a top contender for the role of the investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist, but Craig makes a moodier, more serious and less distracting choice.Mara has faced harrowing circumstances before, as a high schooler stalked by Freddy Krueger in the remake of A Nightmare...

Celebs Give Support for the Prop. 8 Ruling

Celebs Give Support for the Prop. 8 Ruling

“We cried when we heard the ruling,” says Anne Chamberlain, wife of actress Megan Cavanagh (Exes & Ohs). “I was braced for a class action suit with the other 18,000 couples if they came after our legal union, but now they are on the defensive and I feel quite optimistic.”   Southern California was abuzz after the ruling that overturned Prop. 8, which had disallowed same-sex marriage. Lots of celebrities have come out in support of the ruling, including Rob Reiner. Chamberlain and Cavanagh have been together since 2006 and legally married in August 2008, “the same day as Portia and Ellen, during the window before Prop. 8 passed,” says Chamberlain.   An instructor at the Academy of Art University where she teaches masters classes in...

Runaways Return and Ellen’s Out, JLo’s In

Runaways Return and Ellen’s Out, JLo’s In

“I’ve been a big Joan Jett supporter since the Runaways,” said Cherie Currie when I asked if she’s still friends with Jett since reuniting as consultants on The Runaways. (The film starred Kristen Stewart as Jett and Dakota Fanning as Currie, channeling her dramatic stage presence.)  “In fact, we’re playing together this summer,” she said. “I’m on the same bill at the Pacific Amphitheater.” Currie will join Joan Jett and the Blackhearts on Aug. 11 at the Orange County Fair Summer Concert Series in Costa Mesa, Calif.  Apparently all that bad blood that spilled so painfully decades ago when Currie bolted from their hugely successful all-girl teen band is like water under the bridge. In fact, at a free concert last week...

And the Winner Is….

And the Winner Is….

Bloomington actor (from left) Allison McAtee, Curve writer Laurie Schenden and Sarah Stouffer I reviewed some of the award-winning films at Outfest, the 2010 LA Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, but also have a few awards of my own. First the official awards: A Marine Story, a feature that puts a face on the military’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy,  won Outfest’s Grand Jury and Audience awards, as well as best actress for Dreya Weber. I wrote about visiting the set during filming in the print edition of Curve this month so check it out.  International Dramatic Feature:  Maxine Peake, a seasoned British actor, rocks as the modern-thinking woman trying to tip-toe the boundaries of period conventions in The Secret Diaries of Miss Jane Lister. Fear...

Lohan: Most Wanted

Lohan: Most Wanted

Lindsay Lohan, the most wanted lesbian among media piranhas and paparazzi, heads to the big house on or before July 20—and girl, this big house ain’t no nightclub. Miss party pants got 90 days for violating probation by failing to attend court-ordered alcohol education classes. News reports also say that Lohan, who turned 24 on July 2, has a new Sapphic squeeze. In May she supposedly hooked up with actress Julia I. Pal-Chaudhuri, aka Indrani, now reports say that Lohan has been dating Eilat Anschel since May. Some reports make it sound as though she’s hooked up with an Israeli commando. In Israel, military service is mandatory for men and women, so all the talk about the swaggering service member is probably exaggerated. In our house dance lessons were mandatory...

Fests of the West

Outfest staff members at 2010 launch party. This week Frameline in San Francisco is winding down a seemingly endless array of films through June 27. Outfest hosted filmmakers in Los Angeles earlier this month with a launch party at La Vida, a swanky bar/restaurant tucked into an outer nook of Sunset Gower Studios. Both festivals are among the world’s most prestigious gay and lesbian film events.Outfest’s opening night isn’t until July 8, so a new crop of filmmakers joined veterans of the festival experience at La Vida just before heading north to Frameline.Every LGBT film festival around the planet is celebrating Wolfe Video’s 25th anniversary this year. Undertow, a film from Peru that company founder Kathy Wolfe calls “an absolutely beautiful film,”...

An American ‘Dragon?’

An American ‘Dragon?’

If you haven’t yet heard of Noomi Rapace and the Millennium trilogy from Sweden, you will.  Rapace, a young Swedish actress, “definitely has gay cult status here,” says my friend and colleague, Judi Gilbert, an editor in Germany. The three Millennium books are bestsellers around the world and are second only to the Harry Potter books in the United States, according to the New York Times. All three have been made into films featuring Rapace as Lisbeth Salander, a gifted and queer computer hacker whose sketchy upbringing has instilled, shall we say, a few noticeable anti-social quirks? The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, the first film, was released with subtitles in U.S. theaters in March. A beautifully shot, character-driven detective thriller, it’s reminiscent...

From the Real World

From the Real World

I owe Tammy Lynn Michaels an apology. I was pretty sure she woke up one day, 35 and covered in kid-spit, wondering whatever happened to all the makeup and wardrobe people, the paparazzi who clamored for her sexy bright-eyed picture a decade ago, when she was so popular on Popular and kicked tush in the short film D.E.B.S. But she’s saying that no, her split with Melissa Etheridge wasn’t “mutual,” as the singer-songwriter has so diplomatically stated while promoting her new album. Tammy is making it clear that it wasn’t her idea to bust up their family. Personally, I’m disturbed when two people, regardless of sexuality, take on the responsibility of children and then don’t stick it out until the little rug rats are off and running their own...
